Annuities & Divorce: A Costly Combination

Divorce can be a very difficult process for all parties involved. Setting aside the emotional impact, it can also be very destructive to the financial well-being of both parties. And, if your client counts an annuity or two among his or her investable assets, that client’s net worth may be reduced even more than expected.

Most divorce attorneys just assume an annuity should be split evenly between both spouses, like most other assets. Unfortunately, when the divorce decree is issued by the court to do just that, irreversible damage has usually been done.

In the workshop, we will explore potential strategies for dealing with the costly combination of annuities and divorce.

Collaborative Divorce and the Financial Planning Professional

Americans have been barraged for years about the failing institution of marriage and the soaring divorce rates. Everyone knows someone who's gotten a divorce. The likelihood of advisors encountering a client or prospect who is considering a divorce, in the process of, or previously divorced is high.

The goal of this presentation is to show advisors how to play a more active role in the collaborative divorce process with their clients and prospects to the benefit of clients.

Learning Objective(s)
1) Educate about Collaborative Divorce and the process; 2) Educate Financial Planning Professionals regarding roles traditionally played in divorce, and the roles and value-added in a Collaborative Divorce; 4) Discuss financial planning opportunities in
Collaborative Divorce.
