For people to successfully use financial services and markets, they must have some degree of financial literacy. According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, 63% of Americans are categorized as "financially illiterate."

Financial illiteracy knows no income boundaries. While there is a relationship between financial illiteracy and poverty, some very wealthy people are financially illiterate. The National Financial Educators Council estimated that in 2017 alone, lack of knowledge about personal finance cost Americans over $280 billion dollars. That’s a lot of moolah.

Without an understanding of key concepts in finance, it makes it difficult for the majority of the population to make the right decisions – and to build wealth. For anyone working in financial services, it's easy to understand the threat that financial illiteracy has on your business today and in the future.

For the Financial Planning Association of Tampa Bay, Mark’s work as a lobbyist for FCEE has led to an understanding to share about Financial Literacy and the economic impacts of teaching students and teachers. The Financial Planning Associations in Florida have advocated for Financial Literacy in high schools for years. Mark will provide an update on the status of the bill in Florida’s Legislature requiring ½ credit in Financial Literacy for high school graduation and review the National Standards for Financial Literacy which provide a framework for teaching personal finance in kindergarten through 12th grade.
